The city of Cusco, of 300'000 inhabitants, was the ancient capital of the Inca empire until it was conquered by the Spaniards. If you want to come to Cusco, you must be accustomed to high altitudes, since the city is located at 3400 meters (11'300 feet) above sea level.
As a result of the conquest, allmost all Peruvians adopted the religion of the conquerors, which is Roman Catholicism. But many of them (especially in Cusco) still follow in their hearts the ancient religion of the Incas. They worship incaic gods such as Pachamama (Mother Earth), Inti (the Sun god), and others. Very few have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Today, Cusco attracts many tourists because of its archeological sites. The ruins of the incaic fortress of Machu Picchu, at about 80 miles from Cusco, are known worldwide.
Many foreigners coming to Cusco are "esoteric tourists", seeking the spiritual powers to be found at the places where the Incas worshipped their gods.

Pray for Cusco!

- The conquest left deep wounds in the Peruvian population which did not completely heal until today. Even after 180 years of independence, many live still in the mentality of a conquered country. Pray that God will heal the wounds and bring reconciliation, and that many will find the real freedom which only Jesus Christ can give.
- Many people suffer from bondage due to practices of occultism. Pray for God's liberation in their lives.
- It is not easy to be a Christian in this surrounding. Lack of good spiritual leaders and counselors, pressure from relatives and economic pressure, and the heritage of the personal and national past, make it difficult for Christians to stay faithful to the Lord and collaborate in His ministry. Pray that God will pour out His Holy Spirit over His people, and that He will strengthen us and equip us for the work to which He called us.
- Everything mentioned so far affects also the children. Additionally, many children suffer from a desintegrated family, abuse and cruelty. Even in the Christian churches, only a small percentage of children live together with their father and mother. Pray to the Lord that He will emotionally and spiritually restore the lives of children, and that He will call many workers to share His love with them.
